Paul T. Troughton. Convenient multi-channel sound in the home. Proceedings of the 17th Audio Engineering Society UK Conference, pp. 102-105, 2002.

Multi-channel audio content is becoming more common, and the number of channels used is increasing, from 5.1 up to 7.1 and beyond. In a dedicated listening room, this is no problem. In a real home, however, installing the required number of speakers is a significant problem. This paper reviews how these problems have been addressed in the past, then examines and contrasts two more recent solutions: virtual surround sound over two speakers, and the use of a phased array speaker (sound projector) for beamforming.
